Introduction open

As Ethernet is becoming the main technology for non-traditional networking applications (e.g. Industrial, Automotive, Audio Video Broadcast), new types of interfaces and new features, not supported by standard Ethernet ASSP (Application Specific Standard Parts) are required.

For those new applications, implementers have extended ASSPs with FPGAs,or other logic, to add features enhancing the functionality or the ASSPs. This approach adds development times, increases the application cost and, potentially, reduces the system's reliability.

In, addition, using ASSP devices for industrial applications may not be a viable long term solution due to long lifetime required by customers to maintain the continuity of an installed system. ASSP obsolescence can then become a major issue that may lead to last-time-buy stocking costs or important redesign costs.

Standard ASSPs are also designed for specific applications, typically focusing on telecom and data networks, and may not be qualified for extended temperatures for Industrial, Automotive or, potentially, Military and Space environments.

To address those challenges, MorethanIP has developed a flexible Ethernet Switch block that can either be used unmodified (ASSP Model) in volume applications or can be customized and enhanced with new peripheral blocks to meet specific application needs or specific cost targets (FlexASSP model).



ASSP Model open

In this model, the MorethanIP switch block is implemented on a standard low cost FPGA platform. The switch block is delivered as a protected FPGA programming file and is enabled with a security device.

The FPGA programming file can be downloaded from the MorethanIP Website and the security device, required to enable the Switch on a board, is sold by MorethanIP. One security device is required per FPGA.

The platform FPGA is selected so that it can be ordered with commercial, industrial or automotive depending on customer needs. By using a standard FPGA platform, it is possible to ensure a very long product lifetime.

To order and use a standard, unmodified, MorethanIP ASSP:
  • Select the FPGA temperature range
  • Order the FPGA from a local distributor
  • Order the security device from MorethanIP
  • Mount the FPGA with the MorethanIP security device
  • Use the Switch ASSP

FlexASSP Model open

The MorethanIP Switch block can be used to design a custom device, for example, to:

  • Add functionally (e.g. CAN Bus interface, PCIe, DMA, Audio / Video terminal, Sensor / Driver, …)
  • Use a different FPGA platform
  • Design a low cost ASIC for high volume applications
  • Add an embedded processor (e.g. ARM)

To create a custom switch, MorethanIP licenses its Switch block IP so that additional logic can be added.

The Switch Block can be licensed in encrypted format, for custom FPGA development, or in source code format, for custom ASIC development.

The encrypted FPGA design provided in the FlexASSP FPGA Design Kit<URL> is protected and should be enabled with a MorethanIP security device to reduce the Switch initial license cost.

The source code design provided in the FlexASSP ASIC Design Kit<URL> is not protected and no security device is needed to use the Switch on board.

To order, design and use a FlexASSP custom FPGA:

  • Order the MorethanIP FlexASSP FPGA DevKit
  • Integrate the switch block IP with a customer design
  • Order the FPGA from a local FPGA distributor
  • Order the security device from MorethanIP
  • Mount the FPGA with the MorethanIP security device
  • Use the customer  ASSP

To order, design and use a FlexASSP custom ASIC:

  • Order the MorethanIP FlexASSP ASIC DevKit
  • Integrate the switch block IP with a customer design
  • Produce mask and device
  • Use the customer  ASSP

For FlexASSP development, other third party boards can be used.

The MorethanIP ASSP and FlexASSP models provide a new model to enable the use of the MorethanIP switch Core with no or limited initial license cost.
The MorethanIP ASSP and FlexASSP roadmap includes Bridges and High Throughput Switches:

  • Multiport 10Geth Switch
